Environmental policy
CYBASE Pty Ltd is an archaeological consultancy. The below policy sets out how the business looks after the environment in its travel, fieldwork, and reporting.
Environmental policy and management system
CYBASE keeps the below environmental policy, and reviews it when the way the business travels, works on site, or produces reports.
Environmental management is part of our everyday best practice. All tasks, from the desktop research and assessment to site-specific safe work method statements, have environmental management in mind.
Environmental hazard identification, assessment and control
Environmental hazards are identified and controlled as part of planning and delivering each archaeological contract.
- Identify. Before fieldwork, the desktop assessment and the client’s project information are used to note access, remnant vegetation, waterways, known contamination, and the limits of the approved investigation area.
- Assess. Those constraints are written into the methodology and the site-specific safe work method statement, alongside other safety controls.
- Control. Work stays inside the approved area and permit conditions. Vehicles stay on formed tracks and designated access. Test pits and salvage excavations are located and closed out as the methodology requires.
- Unexpected hazards. If contamination, unmapped sensitive vegetation, or another environmental issue is found on site, work in that area stops. The client or superintendent is notified, and work will only resume once an appropriate resolution is agreed upon.
Emissions reduction target
CYBASE’s target is that road travel for the business is undertaken via electric vehicle, and charged primarily from solar.
Trips are kept to site work and meetings that are required to be in person. Desktop assessments and reporting are completed remotely, based on project requirements.
Where flying is the only way to reach a location, a petrol or diesel vehicle may need to be utilised.
Waste minimisation
Archaeological advice produces very little waste. On every project, CYBASE:
- Issues reports, plans, and catalogues electronically unless a client, archive, or regulator asks for hard copies.
- Prints only the copies that have been asked for.
- Brings durable field equipment that is used again on later projects.
- Removes every item of waste it brings to or creates on the site.
- Separates recyclable packaging where a recycling service is available.
Re-used and recycled materials
CYBASE reuses and maintains field equipment as much as possible. This includes survey and recording gear, hand tools, and sieves. Deliverables are digital and where a hard copy is required, printing is limited to that request.
Sustainable food systems
When CYBASE is in the field or working in a new place, meals are bought from local businesses, with a preference for food that is grown or supplied from the local area.
